We Await the Paschal Feast

With the season of Lent beginning on Wednesday, 2/14, Valentine’s Day, we start our journey towards the cross, the tomb, and ultimately the resurrection of Christ Jesus. As the preface for the Eucharistic Prayer states,For by your gracious gift each year
your faithful await the sacred paschal feasts
with the joy of minds made pure.

Our task, or goal this Lenten season is to avoid sin. Each and every day of our lives, we are tempted by sin, but must avoid it at all costs so to rejoice and enjoy the glory of the resurrection at Easter. 
This is my second favorite time of year, for many reasons, but, most importantly, for the reason that we get to rejoice in the resurrection of Christ from the dead; the ultimate sacrifice, of whose birth was proclaimed by the prophets and death forecasted by them as well.
May God’s everlasting love be with you now and always.

Slips/Trips/Falls

I have to say, being in recovery during this COVID-19 period has had its share of obstacles and challenges to overcome. As many of you know, I’m participating in Sarasota County’s DUI Court Program, a comprehensive 12 month treatment court that offers DUI offenders the opportunity to embrace recovery, get mental health counseling, obtain psychiatric treatment, and overall grow as individuals while under the supervision of the 12th Judicial Circuit. Mid March, around St. Patrick’s Day, it was announced that all treatment courts were closing for a two week period because of the virus. Alright, no big deal, a small change in the routine for a week or two but nothing I couldn’t handle. End of March, it’s extended to Mid April. One week into April, extended until the end of May. So, if I’m understanding this right, basically we’re going to unleash a bunch of (not all) folks in early recovery out into the world with zero accountability to anyone and just expect that everything will be fine...

Responsibility

As I pondered the quote given, it caused me to reflect on my own journey so far in my recovery. If I look back on the multiple times that I attempted to get sober and put my life back together, it was definitely evident that at that time that something/someone else was controlling my life. I got married in October of 2009 and for the first few years, my marriage was fantastic. By 2012, I was drinking again and by 2013 had a girlfriend on the side while still married to my wife. I’m not proud of these actions but I was letting alcohol make poor decisions for me. I thought I had the desire to take responsibility and tried to stop but to no avail. In 2015, I kept feeling sick and nauseous, saw the doctor, and her suggestion was that I needed to cut back on drinking or else I was going to not only ruin my liver but also my stomach as well.
