Hymn of Heaven

The song in the subject line just reminds me about what we celebrate this weekend. So many parishes have Eucharistic processions with the monstrance, etc for Christ the King (which is all well and good) ONLY if we understand the meaning of the solemnity. This feast teaches us to use our own authority to support the message of Jesus in the world and ultimately fulfill 4 key points in our lives:


1. Learning to live Christ’s presence in our own lives and sharing it with those around us.


2. Fighting against the enemies of the kingdom of God.


3. Use our voice to pass on Jesus’ message.


4. Make Christ the King of our own personal, social, cultural, and spiritual lives.


Christus vincit! Christus regnat! Christus, Christus imperat! Christ conquers! Christ rules! Christ reigns!

Slips/Trips/Falls

I have to say, being in recovery during this COVID-19 period has had its share of obstacles and challenges to overcome. As many of you know, I’m participating in Sarasota County’s DUI Court Program, a comprehensive 12 month treatment court that offers DUI offenders the opportunity to embrace recovery, get mental health counseling, obtain psychiatric treatment, and overall grow as individuals while under the supervision of the 12th Judicial Circuit. Mid March, around St. Patrick’s Day, it was announced that all treatment courts were closing for a two week period because of the virus. Alright, no big deal, a small change in the routine for a week or two but nothing I couldn’t handle. End of March, it’s extended to Mid April. One week into April, extended until the end of May. So, if I’m understanding this right, basically we’re going to unleash a bunch of (not all) folks in early recovery out into the world with zero accountability to anyone and just expect that everything will be fine...

Responsibility

As I pondered the quote given, it caused me to reflect on my own journey so far in my recovery. If I look back on the multiple times that I attempted to get sober and put my life back together, it was definitely evident that at that time that something/someone else was controlling my life. I got married in October of 2009 and for the first few years, my marriage was fantastic. By 2012, I was drinking again and by 2013 had a girlfriend on the side while still married to my wife. I’m not proud of these actions but I was letting alcohol make poor decisions for me. I thought I had the desire to take responsibility and tried to stop but to no avail. In 2015, I kept feeling sick and nauseous, saw the doctor, and her suggestion was that I needed to cut back on drinking or else I was going to not only ruin my liver but also my stomach as well.
