You Know Not the Day Nor the Hour

 We’re slowly approaching the end of the calendar year but more importantly the end of the liturgical year and the beginning of Advent. This weekend’s Gospel reminds us that just like the ten virgins, we are called to remain alert for we don’t know when Christ will return to us on Earth.

As we journey towards Advent, I feel compelled to write about the need for the peace that our Advent journey and the upcoming Christmas season are intended to bring. With the infighting taking place across the world, especially in Gaza and the Ukraine, the world needs peace more than ever. Scripture during the near Christmas season tells us “How lovely on the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, announcing peace and proclaiming news of gladness.” Our need for peace around the world and in our own lives is more evident than ever, especially as death tolls rise across the Holy Land. I pray that on all sides of the Gaza war that the work be towards peace instead of hate. 

May we in the coming weeks begin to prepare our hearts for the prince of peace who comes to us on December 25th. May there be peace on Earth sooner than later.

Slips/Trips/Falls

I have to say, being in recovery during this COVID-19 period has had its share of obstacles and challenges to overcome. As many of you know, I’m participating in Sarasota County’s DUI Court Program, a comprehensive 12 month treatment court that offers DUI offenders the opportunity to embrace recovery, get mental health counseling, obtain psychiatric treatment, and overall grow as individuals while under the supervision of the 12th Judicial Circuit. Mid March, around St. Patrick’s Day, it was announced that all treatment courts were closing for a two week period because of the virus. Alright, no big deal, a small change in the routine for a week or two but nothing I couldn’t handle. End of March, it’s extended to Mid April. One week into April, extended until the end of May. So, if I’m understanding this right, basically we’re going to unleash a bunch of (not all) folks in early recovery out into the world with zero accountability to anyone and just expect that everything will be fine...

Responsibility

As I pondered the quote given, it caused me to reflect on my own journey so far in my recovery. If I look back on the multiple times that I attempted to get sober and put my life back together, it was definitely evident that at that time that something/someone else was controlling my life. I got married in October of 2009 and for the first few years, my marriage was fantastic. By 2012, I was drinking again and by 2013 had a girlfriend on the side while still married to my wife. I’m not proud of these actions but I was letting alcohol make poor decisions for me. I thought I had the desire to take responsibility and tried to stop but to no avail. In 2015, I kept feeling sick and nauseous, saw the doctor, and her suggestion was that I needed to cut back on drinking or else I was going to not only ruin my liver but also my stomach as well.
